We had the world's largets and thinnest TV all the way to a see through tv. Yes that's right a see through TV.
I can see why although there were lots of cool things to see at CES. I can also see how these trade show type events are losing their luster especially with Apple already pulling out of Macworld Expo a years back and now Microsoft saying they will no longer participate in CES. I wonder how much longer this event will last. But regardless here are some of the few things that stood out to me the most from CES (that don't involve TV's) and two of the things I want to show you are from companies that I already did reviews on other products of theirs.
First up is Onlive. In my last review for them I mentioned how much promise they had especially with gaming and changing the need for expensive gaming systems. Well, they have branched out a little with this new app. Basically it allows the user to have their own personal virtualized copy of windows 7 on their iPad. That's right your own, in the cloud, copy of Windows with microsoft office supplied. Now their free offering is a bit limited with space at only 3 gigabits of memory to save files. They also promise an app for android and the mac is coming soon. They will have future updates where you can install your own apps just like it was your own computer for the paid virsion. This seems to have a lot of promise to it, just like the gaming platform does. It will be neat to see how this one works out. Also Onlive announced that their app would be coming to all google tv devices so you can play games on your tv without buying their hardware.
Next up along the same lines is the new proof of concept from Razer. It is called Project Fiona. It is a table specifically made for gaming. I thought this was pretty neat but at the projected price tag of $1000 and the fact that a tablet isn't exactly upgradable I do not see this really being anything more than a pet project.
Vizio made several announcements of new products from a stunning cinema wide tv, to a new 10" tablet, to them entering the computer market. The thing that I really find interesting about them entering the computer market is that these machines they have shown us rival what Apple makes with such a stunning look and with promises that these machines will contain no bloatware. All for half of what Apple would charge for such amazing looking computers.
One thing to mention about the all in one pc's shown here is that they come in 24" and 27" and that they offer two hdmi inputs so you can plug in say and xbox or ps3 to use their displays. I think if Vizio plays their cards right this could turn out really good for them.
Vizio's new talbet is one of the first really nice designs in a tablet that actually differs in my opinion than the iPad and it is getting a lot of great reviews from those that were at CES for performance and beauty. It will be interesting to see the price point that Vizio chooses for this tablet.
Most other companies were showing off their new ultrabooks. Ultrabooks are basically a project intel has asked pc makers to do to rival the Macbook Air. Create a thin attractive and powerful laptop for under $1000. There were a lot of showings of these new ultraboooks but I thought they were all boring and really unimpressive.
Microsoft was showing off windows 8 on a lot of new windows based tablets. I have to admit it looks really nice on a tablet but it makes me wonder how that will translate over into the regular pc market. Will it become another vista for non tablet users? I guess we will have to wait and see.
Pretty decent showing for the most part and this review really doesn't skim the surface of what CES had to offer, but I thought these items stuck out the most and that you would find them interesting. All in all I think it will be another great year for tech.
